Panel: The Role of Optical Networks in Supporting the Edge Continuum Computing Paradigm

Edge continuum computing is emerging as a key paradigm to support ultra low latency, high bandwidth, and context aware services by seamlessly integrating cloud, edge, and far edge resources. In this context, optical networks play a fundamental role in providing scalable, high capacity, and energy efficient interconnection across distributed computing infrastructures. This workshop/panel focuses on how optical transport can effectively support the edge continuum, including architecture that includes mobile access technologies (e.g., 5G Advanced and beyond), enabling flexible fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul solutions for edge and near edge computing nodes. The discussion will address architectural options, orchestration challenges, and emerging use cases, highlighting how integrated optical and mobile networking is essential for future edge to cloud computing systems.
