The international standards (ITU-T Recommendations) developed by ITU-T Study Group 15 provide technical specifications giving shape to global communication infrastructure. The group’s standards define technologies and architectures of optical transport networks enabling long-haul global information exchange; fibre- or copper-based access networks through which subscribers connect; and home networks connecting in-premises devices and interfacing with the outside world. This includes the development of standards for the optical transport network, access network and home network infrastructures, systems, equipment, optical fibres and cables, including submarine cables, and the related installation, maintenance, management, test, instrumentation and measurement techniques, and control plane technologies to enable the evolution toward intelligent transport networks.
This session presents a general overview of recent work of ITU-T SG15, as well as a deeper discussion about the impact that new fibre technology will have on communication networks and the evolving relationship of AI to in-premises, access and transport networks.
