Our editor-in-chief Stephen Hardy’s always prescient crystal ball gazing had me well primed to have my eye caught by the roster of industry luminaries slated to dig into software defined networks (SDNs) at OFC/NFOEC March 19, 2013.
While SDN became the buzzword du jour in 2012, growing out of virtualization concepts and promising to cut costs and add flexibility to networks. But this topic is top of mind – and coming of age - for us this year here at Lightwave, as evidenced by our choice to lead off our 2013 Technology Forecast with a look at SDNs – as Hardy predicts that 2013 will be the year when we focus on making these fast, flexible software-defined networks “smart” as well.
“Application aware” networks would be able to set the right bandwidth and priority level for each service, but in order to do this, the control planes of equipment operating at different layers will all have to communicate with each other. Different system houses have different ideas on how this ought to happen – which would result in a “hodgepodge of largely proprietary schemes,” as Hardy put it. The answer is to submit these concepts to the appropriate standards bodies.
Which is a part of what’s likely to make this session so intriguing.
The event is free and runs from 10:15 to 12:55 with seven different sessions (for details on the individual sessions, click here). Speakers include Mike Loomis, Chief Technology Officer & Vice President, Alcatel-Lucent, Nabil Bitar, Principal Architect, Verizon and more.
