It's the Last Day for OFC 2019

On day five (and how is it already day five?), there is a wealth of technical and show floor programs. In the exhibition, 10 programs are offered, including two Market Watch panels and a product showcase featuring Huawei's Optical Network 2.0.

Technical content is supported with 20 sessions that run from 08:00 to 16:00 and a poster session. And the 2019 OFC Conference comes to a conclusion with the Postdeadline Paper Session. Technical (full conferrence) registrants can obtain the postdeadline paper digest this morning starting at 10:00 in Registration (Hall E).

OFC Show Floor Programs: Posing the Questions and Exploring the Answers

Market Watch Panel V: What’s After 400G Ethernet Inside the Data Center

Thursday, 7 March, 10:30 – 12:00, Exhibit Theater I

Addressing the industry’s burgeoning topics, today’s show floor programming packs a one-two punch of asking the hard questions and working to define the answers.

In the Market Watch session, What’s After 400G Ethernet Inside the Data Center, an industry panel works through key questions to net industry advances. Is there a drive to 800G or 1.6T? What modulation techniques can help? What challenges must be tackled to achieve these speeds?

“While increasing speeds inside the data center is one development direction, there is also strong market demand for coherent transponder technology with lower cost, power consumption and size for inter-data center connectivity,” shared OFC 2019 General Co-Chair Gabriella Bosco, Politecnico di Torino, Italy. “Pluggable digital coherent optical transceiver modules offer opportunities for 400GbE data-center interconnect over metro distances.”

To that point, OIF is looking to interoperability specifications for 400G-ZR. These efforts strive to reduce the cost and complexity for high-bandwidth data center interconnects and promote interoperability among optical module manufacturers. The goal is for this initiative to result in an implementation agreement for 400G-ZR and short-reach DWDM multi-vendor interoperability.

POF Symposium — Organized by Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO)

Thursday, 7 March, 11:00 – 13:00, Exhibit Theater III

This symposium covers recent developments in plastic optical fibers (POF) technology, applications, technical standards, industry progress and new markets. Speakers will review opportunities for POF in areas such as Gigabit POF, 4K/8K ultra high definition television (UHDTV), home networking, aerospace & automobile applications, POF sources & sensors and high-temperature POF.

400ZR Specification Update — Organized by Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF)

Thursday, 7 March, 10:15 – 11:15, Exhibit Theater II

Attend a panel of industry experts representing the breadth of the coherent eco-system who will discuss and debate the conflicting demands for a near-term, high-volume, short reach, DWDM 400G optical link. Power, reach and architecture are some of the conflicting requirements that will be addressed.

The New Transport Network — Organized by Telecom Infra Project (TIP)

Thursday, 7 March, 14:30 – 16:00, Exhibit Theater III

This session will provide a technical overview of the technologies that the Open Optical & Packet Transport team is developing as part of the Telecom Infra Project and how those technologies are meeting the different requirements and use cases from operators today.

Highlights from the Floor

On the component level, this OFC seems to be a gap year as companies are getting down to the hard work of designing the next generation of coherent technology, including 400ZR. Component vendors showed progress but had few groundbreaking announcements. The progress next year should be exciting to see. On the equipment side, this is the year that the promises from the last few years became real products. These products, some of which were in trials over the last few months, will be rolling out over the next few months, joining the Ciena 400G product that debuted in 2018.
