In Support of the OFC Community
The OFC Conference supports a community of scientists and innovators working on the latest advances in the science and applications for optical networking and communications. The goal of co-sponsors and committee members is to create a meeting experience that truly represents the global community. OFC provides prizes to ensure an experience that is professionally inclusive and geographically diverse. Authors opt-in for the prizes during the submission process.
Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition
The competition recognizes innovation, research excellence, and presentation abilities in optical communications. The competition is endowed by a grant from Corning Inc. and administered by the Optica Foundation. To be eligible for consideration, students must submit a paper to OFC and opt-in to the competition during the submissions process. Six finalists are selected to present their paper to the OFC Chairs virtually or in a private in-person session. One first-prize recipient receives a USD $3,500 stipend.
Criteria for Eligibility
All the following criteria must be met:
- Submitting author must opt-in to the competition during the regular submissions process and follow all of the instructions provided on the submission site.
- Presenting author must be an undergraduate or graduate student of an educational institution of collegiate grade who is devoting more than half-time to studies within the institution at the time the paper was written.
- Paper must be submitted and accepted during the regular call for papers process for OFC. (Note: Postdeadline Papers are not part of this competition).
- The paper must be presented orally by the student author during the conference.
Selection Process
- All properly submitted papers are reviewed and scored according to standard OFC Technical Program Committee review criteria.
- Six papers will be selected as semi-finalists and asked to formally apply online.
- The Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition selection committee will select one first prize recipient and two honorable mentions.
- Finalists are judged on innovation, research excellence, and presentation skills. Each finalist will present their paper to the OFC Chairs virtually or in a private session at the conference. Details of this session will be made available to the finalists.
Tingye Li Innovation Prize
The Tingye Li Innovation Prize and USD 3,000 is presented to an accepted paper to OFC that has demonstrated innovative ideas. The prize, established in 2013, is endowed by Alliance Fiber Optic Products, Inc., AT&T, Optica, IEEE Photonics Society, IEEE Communications Society, Thorlabs, Inc, The Li Family and supporters of the Tingye Li Memorial Fund, and is administered by the Optica Foundation.
Criteria for Eligibility
- Applicant must opt in for consideration during the submission process. Individuals must have an accepted paper to OFC or a postdeadline paper (PDP) from the previous year.
- Eligible applicant is no older than the age of 39 during the calendar year the prize is given.
- Applicant must be responsible for and exhibit innovative ideas in their research.
