Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations consisting of many thousands of satellites are poised for deployment in the near future, which will serve as vital connectivity, offering primary access in remote regions and backup access for terrestrial infrastructure. In the convergence of space and terrestrial networks, LEO satellite constellations therefore emerge as pivotal players in the provisioning of true global connectivity, available always and everywhere.
Enterprises, and possibly even consumers, might in the future connect to the internet through either satellite alone, or a combination of terrestrial and satellite networks. This evolving interplay between terrestrial fiber networks and satellite constellations raises questions: where does the realm of fiber networks end and that of satellite communication begin in shaping the future internet?
As of today, the satellite and terrestrial network communities are mostly focused on their respective technological developments and use cases. That’s why we are bringing speakers from commercial satellite operators, satellite-and-satellite communication manufacturers and traditional service providers, as well as researchers and academic speakers together to share their visions and join in discussion during this symposium.
