Over the past three decades, fiber optic sensors (FOS) have made a complete transition from basic lab prototypes to successful commercial products, and proven their benefits and efficacy to measure physical parameters with light. Their commercialization has been slow-moving and rocky at times, but always progressive, innovative and dotted with multiple successful companies, products and solutions along its path. Today, FOS are used extensively and broadly for different applications – from oil wells, to biomedical probes, to high voltage sensing systems. And given their features and intrinsic characteristics, they are an ideal solution to monitor ageing infrastructure assets around the world. This tech-talk will do a brief overview on the present state of this technology, its envisioned role with the sustainable functionality of infrastructure and overall future outlook
