At the heart of a computing cloud is an amazing network that must provide tremendous bandwidth at high availability and low cost between servers all around the world. Combining physical switches, optical devices, and Software Defined Networking, these networks offer every tenant its own completely customizable virtual network while enabling the cloud platform to optimize its resource usage and automatically mitigate faulty equipment. Drawing examples from Microsoft Azure, I will explain how large cloud networks are designed and operate.
