Mengfan Fu Named 2020 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition Grand Prize Winner

Awardee and finalists presented their research at OFC: The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition

SAN DIEGO – The OSA Foundation (OSAF) and Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced the Grand Prize winner out of 204 paper submissions and six finalists for the 2020 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition. Mengfan Fu, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, received $1,500 USD and presented her paper at OFC: The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition (OFC), 8 March 2020 in San Diego, CA, U.S.A.

Fu’s paper is titled, “Parallel Bisection-based Distribution Matching for Probabilistic Shaping.” Two Honorable Mention awardees, Taichiro Fukui, The University of Tokyo, Japan and Justin Lavrencik, Georgia Institute of Technology, U.S.A., each received $1,000 USD.

Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition prize winners are undergraduate or graduate students from qualifying institutions. All finalists presented their papers at OFC.

“This prize not only recognizes research excellence, but also innovative thinking and effective communication -- two essential skills for a successful career in photonics,” said OSAF Executive Director Chad Stark.  “Through our partnership with Corning Incorporated, the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Prize allows us to challenge young researchers to focus on honing their presentation skills and clearly explaining the impact of their work.”

The 2020 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition finalists are:

Grant Brodnik, University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.A., presenting “Chip-Scale, Optical-Frequency-Stabilized PLL for DSP-Free, Low-Power Coherent QAM in the DCI”

Mengfan Fu, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, presenting “Parallel Bisection-based Distribution Matching for Probabilistic Shaping”

Taichiro Fukui, The University of Tokyo, Japan, presenting “Single-pixel imaging through multimode fiber using silicon optical phased array chip”

Saikrishna Konatham, Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS), Canada, presenting “Photonic-Enabled Real-Time Frequency-Spectrum Tracking of Broadband Microwave Signals at a Nanosecond Scale”

Justin Lavrencik, Georgia Institute of Technology, U.S.A., presenting “168Gbps PAM-4 Multimode Fiber Transmission through 50m using 28GHz 850nm Multimode VCSELs”

Kaihui Wang, Fudan University, China, presenting “Demonstration of SOA-based IM/DD 1T (280Gbit/s×4) PS-PAM8 Transmission over 40km SSMF at O-band”
