Murata eXtrem Broadband Silicon Capacitors at 100 GHz+ available now

With the exponential data and traffic growth that requests faster transmission of the information, Murata pursues its process and product development and offers a new series over 100 GHz, named XBSC (eXtrem Broadband Silicon Capacitor). This series provide superior broadband performance, stability and reliability for all broadband optoelectronics and high-speed data systems.

The XBSC capacitors are suitable for DC blocking and AC coupling applications in all optoelectronics/high-speed data, trans-impedance amplifiers (TIA), receive-and-transmit optical sub-assembly (ROSA/TOSA), synchronous optical networking (SONET), as well as broadband test equipment and broadband microwave/millimeter-wave.

The XBSC capacitors provide broadband performances better than 1.0 dB of insertion loss up to 110 GHz. They also provide very high stability of the capacitance over temperature (60 ppm/K), voltage variation as well as a very high reliability. The XBSC capacitors have an extended operating temperature ranging from -55 to 150°C. The unique technology of integrated passive device in silicon developed by Murata, offers unique performances with low insertion loss, low reflection and excellent phase stability from 160kHz to 110 GHz:

  • Flat frequency response (Insertion Loss < 0.4 dB up to 60 GHz & < 0.9 dB up to 100 GHz);
  • Excellent return loss better than 20 dB;
  • Resonance free and no phase discontinuity thanks to the capacitor single layer design of 50μm thickness;
  • Zero piezoelectric effect and low dielectric absorption (0.05%), at least 12 times lower than ceramic capacitors;
  • Lower dielectric absorption (0.05%) compared with NP0/X7R;
  • No AC distortion thanks to zero piezo effect;
  • Excellent reliability exceeding X7R ceramics by a factor 10 (FIT);
  • Reliable and repeatable performances obtained thanks to a fully controlled production line with high temperature curing (above 900°C) generating a highly pure oxide.
These eXtrem Broadband capacitors with ultra-deep trenches in silicon have been developed using a semiconductor process which enables the integration of trench MOS capacitors providing high capacitance value - for example, 10 nF in a 100 µm profile 0201M SMT (P/N: 939.118.492.510-T3S). Please contact us for other values. Thanks to the adequate land pattern of the pads underneath the component, the impedance discontinuity of the transmission line can be mitigated.

The XBSC series are compliant with standard JEDEC assembly rules, making the product fully compatible with high speed automated pick-and-place manufacturing operations. The XBSC capacitors are RoHS-compliant and are available with lead-free pre-bumped.

The market is continually moving to higher data transmission rates and requires an increasing number of high-performance broadband components. With 100 Millions pieces capacity already installed, Murata can satisfy large volume for production with a short lead-time. A cross reference list of the main capacitor suppliers is available. Moreover, the 3D HFSS models and S-parameters are available for most of our products. For customers’ satisfaction, Murata followed up a quality process based on AEC-Q100 grade 3 Automotive standard (including moisture resistance, mechanical shock, thermal shock, vibration test, life time…).

OFC in San Diego (12-15 March 2018) will be formal launching of this new series, and Murata will be happy to meet you on booth 1808 to give you more details.
