II-VI Incorporated Expands Portfolio of Wavelength Management Solutions for 5G Optical Access Networks

PITTSBURGH, February 28, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – II‐VI Incorporated (Nasdaq:IIVI), a leading provider of solutions for optical networks, today announced the expansion of its portfolio of wavelength management products designed specifically for 5G optical access networks.

5G wireless networks are driving the demand for optical solutions that can cost effectively scale the capacity of the underlying optical access infrastructure to handle orders of magnitude higher bandwidth from next-generation base stations deployed in significantly greater numbers. II-VI will showcase at OFC a portfolio of wavelength management products that are specifically designed to enable next-generation optical access networks exceed their requirements for bandwidth scalability and agility. The new products include:

·         Twin 1x4/1x5 Edge Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) Modules: II-VI’s new edge WSS is cost optimized to meet the 100 GHz fixed grid and low port count requirements for reconfigurable wireless back-haul networks.

·         O/E-band Interleavers: II-VI’s new interleavers leverage the vertical integration of crystal growth, precision surfacing, advanced coatings and micro assemblies to achieve a cost effective and compact solution for front-haul and back-haul networks.

·         Wideband Wavelength Division Multiplexer (WDM) Filters: II-VI’s new wideband filters feature a 3 dB bandwidth of 75 GHz that enables low-cost transceivers, with loose wavelength tolerances, to be deployed in cost-sensitive front-haul and back-haul networks.

“We collaborated with service providers to understand the emerging architecture requirements for the 5G optical infrastructure and we partnered with equipment manufacturers to develop targeted solutions,” said Dr. Sanjai Parthasarathi, Vice President, Strategic Marketing, II-VI Photonics.  “Shipments of our existing products for 5G access network buildouts in Korea and Japan are already growing rapidly. Our new products offer additional capabilities that ultimately will enable consumers and machines get real time access to vast cloud computing resources and networked sensors, for a wide range of new, exciting and transformative applications.”

II-VI’s broad portfolio of wavelength management solutions for 5G access networks includes optical channel monitors, coarse and dense wavelength division multiplexer modules, circulators and switches. The O/E-band interleavers and wideband WDM filters are qualified for outside plant temperatures ranging from -40 to 85°C. All the products in the portfolio of wavelength management solutions for 5G optical access networks are generally available.

II-VI at OFC, Mar. 5-7, 2019, Booth #4312

Applications such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence and machine learning promise to be transformative across a broad range of industries, enabled by advanced technology such as sensors that map their surroundings in three dimensions, communications networks that instantly ferry a vast amount of data across large distances and hyperscale datacenters that rapidly compile and analyze massive amounts of data. II-VI will showcase at OFC new products that enable the 5G optical infrastructure, hyperscale datacenters, 3D sensing and LiDAR to name a few.
