Growing Ecosystem for 200 GbE and 400 GbE Transport to be Demonstrated at OFC

Multi-vendor interoperability provides solution to maximize investment in existing OTN and DWDM networking equipment

Los AngelesAcacia Communications, Optelian, Precise-ITC, Spirent and Xilinx to demonstrate the industry’s first interoperability across the technology spectrum to support 200 GbE and 400 GbE connectivity over standardized OTN and DWDM at OFC 2017.

Spirent, the first to offer 200 GbE testing capabilities, will provide the test equipment generating native 200 and 400 GbE client signals. Precise-ITC will provide the IP required to map the native 200 GbE and 400 GbE client signals into 2x100 and 4x100 OTU4 encapsulated signals, respectively, using a Xilinx UltraScale™ FPGA VCU140 design platform. Optelian will provide the DWDM transport by muxponding the OTU4 signals into 1x200 Gb/s or 2x200 Gb/s DP-16QAM using coherent technology from Acacia Communications. Optelian’s TMX-2200 200G muxponder, scheduled for release later this year, will use Acacia Communications’ CFP2-DCO coherent pluggable transceiver. Acacia Communications is the first to offer a fully-integrated CFP2-DCO, with a software-programmable modulation format that can operate up to 200 Gb/s over a single DWDM wavelength.

“Although OTUCn capable equipment is expected to eventually come onto the market, there is an immediate need to also support the transport of 200 and 400 GbE, and future higher rates, over existing OTN infrastructure,” said Optelian CTO Dr. Sheldon Walklin. “This requires a means to adapt the ultra-high-speed Ethernet signals to standardized OTU4 lanes, preserving the ability to switch and transport such signals using existing OTN and ROADM infrastructure.”

“The demonstration is a good example of companies working together to advance technology to meet the needs of future networks and the significant inter-connectivity bandwidths these networks must support,” said Raj Shanmugaraj, President and Chief Executive Officer of Acacia Communications. “The approach being demonstrated leverages OTN and DWDM networking equipment solutions currently available, which I believe will be of particular interest to many network providers.”

The demonstration and technology will be shown during OFC 2017 being held March 21-23 at the Los Angeles Convention Center:
