Contrasting Early Terrestrial-Subsea Networks with the Present

Thursday, 12 March, 15:10 - 16:00

Theater II

Session Description

Submarine cable systems date back to the late 1840's. We will demonstrate that many of the modern technological, operational, financial, and political revelations in this industry first occurred far in the past. Concepts such as DWDM, lowest latency routes, line coding evolutions, high frequency trading, "Content is King", "Critical Infrastructure", cyber crime, encryption, etc. will be traced back to their sources with a common focus being the "Atlantic Cable" systems connecting London to New York.
