Session Description

The POF Symposium will cover recent developments in plastic optical fibers (POF) technology, applications, technical standards, industry progress and new markets. Leading technical experts and key industry players from adjacent industries such as automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics will be invited to speak at the event.

The POF Symposium agenda will reflect the nature of the POF market - very broad covering all the applications from low to high speed data links, low cost networks for automobiles, homes, aircraft and drones, POF sensors for medical and industrial use and for infrastructure health monitoring, POF for consumer electronics (4K/8K HDTV), as a few examples. There is new R&D on new materials, fiber types, sources, detectors, systems, and instrumentation. POF components are used for green applications such as solar collectors, direct conversion, and energy conservative lighting.

The IEEE published a new IEEE 802.3bv standard “Gigabit Ethernet over Plastic Optical Fiber” in March 2017 that is intended to support Gigabit transmission over POF in key markets like automotive, professional and home networking. IEEE is now pushing POF Ethernet in automobile networking.

Many of the POF users are manufacturers of components, subsystems, and systems which have POF designed into them as critical components. We will invite speakers from auto makers and aircraft manufacturers that have used POF in their latest car models and airplanes, home installers from Europe, consumer electronics companies from Asia, and service providers/cable operators who are evaluating the technology from the U.S.

Biographies
Yasuhiro Koike, Director, Keio Photonics Research Institute (KPRI) and Professor, Keio University, Japan

Yasuhiro Koike is highly regarded internationally as the inventor of Graded-Index Plastic Optical fiber (GI POF). He also invented Zero Birefringent Polymer and Super Birefringent Polymer which have been used in major LCD TVs. He was a Core Researcher of the research project of Face-to-Face Communication system based on the above mentioned technologies on the FIRST Program which was initiated by the Cabinet Office of Japan in 2014.

He has been the General Chair of International POF Conference since 1992. He was conferred as an Honorary Doctorate of Eindhoven University of Technology in 2007. He is a recipient of International Engineering and Technology Award of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), the Fujiwara Award, and Medal with Purple Ribbon awarded by Emperor of Japan, SID Special Recognition Award, etc.

 

Ton Koonen, Professor, Institute for Photonic Integration, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Ton Koonen is full professor in Eindhoven University of Technology since 2001. He is chairman of the group Electro-Optical Communication Systems and vice-dean of the Department Electrical Engineering. Before 2001, he worked for more than 20 years in applied research in industry, amongst others in Bell Labs - Lucent Technologies as member of technical staff and technical manager. He is Bell Labs Fellow, IEEE Fellow, OSA Fellow, and Distinguished Guest Professor of Hunan University, Changsha, China. His current research interests are in access and in-building fiber network techniques, including high-capacity POF networks and radio-over-fiber techniques.

Dr. Hui Pan is Chief Analyst with Information Gatekeepers (IGI) and the Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO).
