Line Side 100Gb/s DWDM Network Solutions – Debating the Options

Session Description

Today’s long haul standards-based DWDM deployments for 100G & higher feature very high dispersion tolerances, but are very expensive to deploy and complex to manage.  Many companies deploying 100G line side DWDM are willing to step outside the box to consider lower cost alternatives.  This panel discussion looks at 100Gb/s line side standards and discusses alternatives for limited distance links.  A chromatic dispersion limited DWDM line side version of PAM-4 is gaining popularity as a low cost alternative to coherent detection receivers, although no industry standard exists today supporting this approach.

We will hear from a private network operator, data center interconnect player, network equipment provider and industry standards representative – pro’s and con’s, and their thoughts on each approach.


Larry Johnson, President, FiberStory, USA

Larry Johnson, President of FiberStory started his career in fiber optics in 1977.  As fiber optics specialist for Tektronix he was involved with the early development of test equipment and fiber optic test & measurement standards.  He founded The Light Brigade in 1986 where he developed over twenty courses on fiber optics.  He is a member of multiple industry technology committees including the Utility Telecom Council and the Fiber Broadband Association. At OFC he has coordinated special events including this year’s Test & Measurement center.  He also writes for several industry publications and is involved with the history of fiber optics.


Tim Yount, Co-Founder, Fiber Insight (FI), USA

Tim has over 30 years experience in various product and marketing related roles for key players in the fiber industry, including Siecor, Tektronix, HP/Agilent, and Acterna/JDSU.  Based on his observations, learning and practical field experiences, his consistent goal has been to provide more useful and effective solutions, plus effective training, to fiber test technicians and engineers.

He co-founded Fiber Insight (FI) with his wife Carla in 2014.   Since then, FI has continued to provide fiber infrastructure testing and networking design certification training (#OTT, #CFCE, #CONA) and a variety of test consulting services.

Although involved in a wide range of fiber topologies and applications, Tim specializes in fiber infrastructure quality assessments to support high-speed applications including DWDM line side 100Gb/s and beyond. 

Through FI he provides services widely throughout North America and Southeast Asia.  Clients include primarily service providers, end users, x-ware and cloud providers, contractors, US Military bases and Aerospace.


Richard Ednay, Technical Director, OTT, UK

Richard has more than 35 years of experience in fibre optics. As Technical Director of OTT, he is one of the world's most experienced trainers in fibre optics and optical networking. He has also played a leading role in International Standards setting for fibre optics, having been involved with IEC, ITU, ISO/IEC and TIA.
His in-depth technical knowledge has been applied in the development of the globally renowned suite of certification programmes from OTT, available through a network of approved training delivery partners. These include the Certified Fibre Characterisation Engineer (CFCE), Certified Optical Network Associate (CONA) and Engineer (CONE) and the Certified Optical Fibre Installer (COFI).

Jörg-Peter Elbers, Senior Vice President Advanced Technology, Standards & IPR at ADVA Optical Networking

Jörg-Peter Elbers is Senior Vice President Advanced Technology, Standards & IPR at ADVA Optical Networking and has more than 20 years of experience in the optical networking industry. At ADVA, he is responsible for technology strategy, applied research, standardization and intellectual property management. Before joining ADVA, Jörg was Director of Technology in the Optical Product Unit of Marconi which was later acquired by Ericsson. Prior to that, he worked at Siemens AG, last as Director of Network Architecture in the Optical Networks Business Unit. Jörg holds a Dipl-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from TU Dortmund University, Germany.


Mark Filer, Principal Optical Network Architect, USA

Mark is currently Principal Optical Network Architect at Microsoft where he is focused on metro DCI, long-haul, and subsea optical solutions and next-generation data center architectures. Prior to that, he spent 14 years in optical R&D at ADVA Optical Networking in Atlanta, GA. He has published research in the areas of cloud-scale open line systems, long-haul transmission, ROADM network architectures, and system impairments. He holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA.


Radha Nagarajan, CTO of Optical Interconnect, Inphi, USA

Dr. Radha Nagarajan has served as Inphi’s Chief Technology Officer, Optical Interconnect, since June 2013. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the area of high-speed optical interconnects. Prior to joining Inphi, he was with Infinera, as a Fellow, working on the design, development and commercialization of large-scale photonic integrated circuits. From 1995 until 2001, he was with SDL (acquired by JDS Uniphase), where he managed the development of the new generation 980nm EDFA pump module.

Dr. Nagarajan is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, UK). He has authored four book chapters in the areas of high-speed optical components and photonic integration. In 2006, he shared the IEEE/LEOS Aron Kressel Award for his work on commercializing large-scale photonic integrated circuits. He has been awarded more than 131 US patents and authored/coauthored over 180 papers in technical journals and conferences in the field of optical components and systems. Dr. Nagarajan grew up in Singapore where he received his B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. He obtained his M.Eng. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Tokyo, and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.


Gert Sarlet, Product Line Manager, Finisar, USA

Gert Sarlet is a Product Line Manager at Finisar, responsible for coherent transceivers and coherent integrated components. Gert has over 15 years of experience in product marketing for optical components and transceivers. He co-founded Syntune, a tunable laser manufacturer based in Stockholm, Sweden, which was acquired by Finisar in 2011. Gert holds a PhD and MSc in Electrical Engineering from Ghent University in Belgium.
