High-Volume Applications of 3-D Sensing in Consumer and Automotive Markets

Session Description

3-D sensing has many applications in consumer markets (which include gesture and facial recognition, gaming, AR/VR, security, and many others) and in automotive markets, specifically for LIDAR and other advanced driver-assistance systems. The recent years have seen initial volume deployments in several of these segments, already driving significant unit volumes for optical components and related hardware. Yet the 3-D sensing market overall is still in a nascent stage, demanding significant future innovation, but also posing a tremendous revenue opportunity for optics and related hardware.

Robert Blum, Director of Strategic Marketing, Intel Corporation, USA

Robert Blum is Director of Strategic Marketing and Business Development for Intel’s Silicon Photonics Product Division. Prior to joining Intel, Robert was Director of Strategic Marketing at Oclaro Inc., and held various Director of Product Management and Marketing roles for its telecommunications division. Before joining Oclaro, Robert was Product Line Manager for optical transmission components at JDS Uniphase Corporation and held various engineering and marketing management roles at Gemfire Corporation. Robert worked at Deutsche Telekom’s research labs in Darmstadt, Germany, while completing his master’s thesis and holds a doctorate degree in Physics from the University of Technology in Hamburg.

Biographies

Brandon Collings, CTO, Lumentum, USA​

Brandon is CTO for Lumentum and is responsible for defining and driving the product and technology roadmaps and strategies.  He held this same role for JDSU’s Communication and Commercial Optical Products business unit which separated to become Lumentum in August 2015.  Prior to JDSU, he held optical network design and development positions at Ciena and Internet Photonics, and was a Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Labs performing research on advanced optical communication network designs and non-linear performance impairments.  He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University in Electrical Engineering.

 

Dr. Sanjai Parthasarathi, Vice President, Strategic Marketing, II-VI, USA

Dr. Sanjai Parthasarathi, Vice President, Strategic Marketing for II-VI Photonics, joined Avanex/II-VI in 2003.  With over 25 years of broad management and technical experience he has held a variety of progressive roles in R&D, manufacturing, product line management and marketing.  Prior to Avanex, Sanjai held senior business and technical management positions at Oplink Communications, TeraStor, Western Digital and Concurrent Technologies Corporation. Sanjai has over 30 publications and 5 patents.  He has a PhD. in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University, M.S. from University of Virginia and a B.S. from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. 

 

Michael Watts, CEO, Analog Photonics, USA

Michael R. Watts received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University in 1996. In 1999 he became a Draper Fellow and received his SM and PhD degrees from MIT in 2001 and 2005, respectively. In 2005 he joined Sandia National Labs where he was a Principal Member of Technical Staff. In 2009 he received an R&D100 Award for work in ultralow power microphotonic modulators and switches. In 2010 he returned to MIT where he is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department (EECS). In 2012, Prof. Watts founded Analog Photonics, where he currently serves as CEO, and is developing chip-scale optical phased array based LiDAR. In 2015 the silicon photonics platform Prof. Watts had developed with SUNY Albany (CNSE) led to the creation of AIM Photonics, a $600M public-private partnership, to which Dr. Watts was named to and currently serves as the Chief Technical Officer.

Martin Zirngibl, CTO, Finisar, USA

Martin Zirngibl was named Corporate CTO in June 2018. He joined Finisar in 2016 as a VP Technology Fellow responsible for coherent product strategy. Prior to Finisar, he held progressive managerial roles at Nokia Bell Labs including Director of Optical Networking Research and Executive Director of Device and Subsystems Research. He also served as a member of technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dr. Zirngibl holds a PhD in Physics and a Diploma in Theoretical Physics from the Swiss Institute of Technology, Lausanne. He received the Bell Labs Fellow award in 2008 and has published more than 100 scientific papers and filed over 50 patents.
