Panel Description:

This session provides a window into what comes next after 400G networks. As our industry rolls out a full smorgasbord of 400G Ethernet solutions for data center communications, including new form factors, modulation techniques, ICs, and wavelengths, the question is how do we scale to 800G and 1.6T? This panel seeks to address these issues:

  • Is the next networking speed 800G or 1.6T? What are the networking implications of each?
  • What are the networking implications and deployment timeframes for 800G or 1.6T?
  • What are the electrical and optical lane speeds?
  • Can lasers scale beyond 100Gb/s per lane?
  • Can front panel pluggables, like QSFP-DD and OSFP, scale to 1.6T?
  • Are embedded optics required?
  • What modulation techniques are required?
  • What are the IC challenges to reach these speeds?

Arlon Martin, Senior Director, Marketing, Samtec, USA

Arlon Martin is the Senior Director of Marketing at Samtec, with responsibilities for optical products, including the FireFly™ Micro Flyover System. Arlon has previously held executive management, marketing and product development positions at Mellanox Technologies, Lumentum, Nokia (Lucent Technologies), and AT&T Bell Laboratories. Arlon participates in the IEEE standards committees for 100, 200 and 400 Gb/s Ethernet, the Ethernet Alliance, the SFP-DD MSA Promoter group, the QSFP-DD MSA Promoter group and the Consortium for On-Board Optics (COBO), where he currently serves as the Chair of the Use Cases and Reliability Sub-Group.

Brad Booth, Network Hardware Manager, Microsoft Corp., USA

Brad Booth is a distinguished leader in Ethernet technology development and standardization. Currently heading up the 25/50G Ethernet Consortium and the Consortium for On-Board Optics, he is a Network Hardware Manager at Microsoft where he leads the development of hyper-scale networking products for Microsoft’s cloud datacenters. Previously, Brad has held strategist and engineering positions at Dell, Intel and Bell-Northern Research. The holder of over 20 patents related to networking technologies, he has also received awards for his contributions to industry consortia and IEEE Ethernet standards.

Andy Bechtolsheim, Chief Development Officer and Chairman, Arista Networks, USA

Andreas “Andy” Bechtolsheim is Chairman, Chief Development Officer and co-founder of Arista Networks, a leading vendor of cloud networking solutions.

Previously, Andy was a co-founder and Chief System Architect at Sun Microsystems, responsible for next generation server, storage, and network architectures. 

As a private venture investor, Andy has been involved in the funding of numerous companies including Google, VMware, Mellanox, and Brocade. He has served on the Board of Directors of over 25 companies, the majority of which went public or were acquired. 

Andy earned a M.S. in computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1976. He was a doctoral student in computer engineering at Stanford University from 1977 to 1982. He has been honored with a Fulbright scholarship, a Studienstiftung scholarship, the Stanford Entrepreneur Company of the year award, the Smithsonian Leadership Award for Innovation, and he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Osa Mok, Chief Marketing Officer, InnoLight Technology Ltd., USA

Osa Mok is the co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer for Innolight Technology Corporation. Mr. Mok has over 35 years of experience in sales and marketing in the communications industry. Mr. Mok began his career as a telecommunications analyst in Intel. Later he joined Hambrecht & Quist as a technology analyst for the communications industry. From 1986 to 1995, he served as a marketing director for GTE Corporation’s Asian business. In 2000, he co-founded Pine Photonics Communications and served as its vice president for sales and marketing. Later in 2004, Mr. Mok co-founded Uniwave Technology Inc., and served as its chief executive officer until he co-founded Innolight in 2008. Mr. Mok engineered Innolight’s rapid rise from a start up to a leading global optical transceiver supplier. Mr. Mok received a Master in Science from Texas A&M University and a Master in Business Administration from University of Santa Clara, USA.       

Mark Nowell, Director of Engineering, Cisco Systems Inc., Canada

Mark Nowell is a Distinguished Engineer in Cisco’s Data Center Switching team. His focus is on next generation interconnect technology innovation to meet Cisco's needs. Mark is also active within the industry standards and forums and has chaired multiple IEEE 802.3 projects including 40 Gb/s SMF, 25 Gb/s Ethernet and 50 Gb/s Ethernet. He represents Cisco on the Boards of the Ethernet Alliance and the Consortium of On Board Optics (COBO). Mark also chairs a number of industry MSA (Multi-source Agreement) groups focusing on next generation optical module form factors (QSFP-DD) and optical interface signaling technology (100G Lambda MSA, 400G BiDi). Before Cisco, Mark previously worked at Hewlett-Packard Research Labs.

Mark earned his Bachelor in Science and Master in Science degrees at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, and his doctorate at Cambridge University in Cambridge, UK.

Claire Szu Ma, Senior Manager of Sales and Marketing, AOI, Taiwan

As a senior manager of Technology & Strategy Marketing at Applied Optoelectronics Inc (AOI), Claire Szuma is involved in the shaping of the data center business, and the alignment of the roadmap for 200G/400G/next generation transceiver projects/products for data transmission applications including data center applications. She is also in charge of transceiver sales efforts to data center applications in AOI.

Within her 11 years with AOI Claire initiated BOSA on board of GPON in FTTx application. In 2009 this resulted in the ONU box price dropped to half of its original. Then she became involved with the growth of 40G/100G transceiver sales which resulted in several hundred million dollars of revenue in AOI’s transceiver business. When AOI started its business in data center applications Claire served as a front facing customer interaction and sales point. Prior to AOI, Claire held a sales position in UMEC for its fiber optics passive components and ONU OEM/ODM business.

Claire holds a Master in Science in Management from Cass Business School in London, UK, and a Bachelor in Science in political science from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan.  

Jeff Twombly, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Credo Semiconductor, USA

Jeff Twombly is Credo’s vice president of marketing and business development.  Jeff has extensive knowledge in marketing complex, high-value based solutions to enterprise, networking, data center and telecommunications corporations. Jeff brings over two decades of marketing, sales, and business development experience to Credo. He thrives in product strategy, technology evangelization, and business development. Before joining Credo, Jeff held key senior executive positions at Frequentz, Parallocity, SiNett, and Cavium Networks.
