Thursday Program Highlights

Market Watch

Panel V: Software Innovations in the Next-generation Optical Transport

10:30 – 12:00, Expo Theater I, Exhibit Hall G

A panel discusses the most important, immediate software innovations in the next-generation transport, including current challenges, and enablers in their adoption; and the strategy and business case for in-house and outsourcing DSP for various markets. Speakers come from Intel, Elenion Technologies, NTT and others.

Panel VI: IP and Optical Integration: Physical or Control Management Plane?

12:30 – 14:00, Expo Theater I, Exhibit Hall G

This panel looks at both SDN-based multi-layer interworking and physical multi-layer integration from an architectural perspective, with a focus on the drivers, benefits, technology enablers and primary applications for each. Speakers come from Oclaro, Verizon, Sedona and others.

Postdeadline Papers

16:30 – 18:30, Rooms 6C, 6D, 6E and 6F

OFC Is Abuzz, 5G Plays a Role, Which Brings Us to PON

By Julie Kunstler, Broadband Access at Ovum

What does 5G have to do with PON? 5G requires significant upgrades to wireline networking in order to support the bandwidth along with numerous bandwidth-intensive applications. PON, with its point-to-multipoint architecture has a role to play in supporting the massive 5G rollout and cell densification plans. In addition, WDM-PON may have found an application, finally.

On Monday, the Beyond 10G Workshop was packed with attendees interested in technical presentations on 25G, 50G and 100G PON. Several service providers are well on their way to 10G PON upgrades, such as China Telecom with 10G EPON OLT upgrades and Verizon with NG-PON2 deployments. Both China Telecom and China Mobile will be deploying XGS-PON later this year along with AT&T. By 2023, Ovum expects next-gen PON OLTs to dominate shipments, reaching almost 70% of total OLT shipments. [more]

Optics to Enable 5G Mobile Networks

By Lisa Huff, Discerning Analytics

The wireless infrastructure market is evolving. While mobile operators must maintain their 2G and 3G networks, they are also busy upgrading as much of them as they can to LTE and LTE-A now and planning for 5G in the next few years. As a result, we are now starting to see entirely new types of equipment. This article highlights content to be presented in Market Watch Panel 2 where industry experts discuss these and other optical technologies that are poised to enable the deployment of 5G. [more]
