How Optics Enable a Mobile, Connected World

The plenary session at this year's OFC conference featured three industry experts who spoke on the future of transport networks, the underappreciated role that undersea fiber optic cables play in connecting our modern world, and the potential dangers of entrusting activities traditionally performed by humans to increasingly inscrutable algorithms.

Metro 100G and Beyond

The explosion of digital video, cloud access and data center traffic is driving the growth of 100 Gb/s fiber optic networks, or 100G, in metro environments. Today, 20G or 40G is sufficient for most metro networks, but "going forward, 100G will be the bandwidth of choice," said Michael Belanger, a product manager at Ciena Corporation.

23 Postdeadline Papers Selected

The newest research findings will be presented at OFC on Thursday, 26 March, 18:00 to 20:00, rooms 403 A-B-C. Subjects include:

First Field Trial of 40-km Reach and 1024-Split Symmetric-Rate 40-Gbit/s λ-tunable WDM/TDM-PON—selected for its excellent demonstration of long reach (40km) high-split-ratio (1:1024) WDM/TDM-PON with novel reach extender application and very fast λ-switching speed (100ns) in a field fiber.

Field Trial of 80-Gb/s PDM-QPSK Signal Delivery over 300-m Wireless Distance with MIMO and Antenna Polarization Multiplexing at W-Band—chosen for its impressive results at W-band and longer distance.

Electronic copies of papers are available online. Print copies of the digests will be available to all technical conference registrants at 09:00 on Thursday at Registration (South Tower Lobby).
