Monday morning's Executive Forum panel was billed as focusing on understanding perspectives from global tier 1 carriers on several key topics in communications infrastructure, and it did not disappoint. What the audience was treated to was deep insight from three subject matter experts.
The Situation in China
Yiran Ma, an engineer at China Telecom, opened the session by talking about the current situation in that country, which is one where they are bracing for huge traffic increases in the coming years, driven mainly by video.

Rounding out Monday morning's Executive Forum panel on key topics in communications infrastructure was Glenn Wellbrock, the director of optical transport planning at Verizon.
Wellbrock began his portion of the morning session by showing some statistics. The company has more than 100 million wireless customers, 17 million FiOS homes, including 5.6 million subscribers to FiOS TV. They also have more than 200 data centers in 24 countries.
In short, he said, it is, "a $127 billion company with a small army working for us."

Software-defined networking (SDN) was the focus of technical session #M2H, "Enabling the Cloud: Unleashing the Capabilities of Emerging Flexible Optical Transport through SDN and NFV I."
Leading off the session was Dan Pitt, the executive director of the Open Networking Foundation, a nonprofit organization that just celebrated its fourth birthday. The foundation has a board that includes such industry heavy hitters as Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Microsoft, Verizon, Deutsche Telekom, NTT and Goldman Sachs, and it is dedicated to the promotion and adoption of SDN through open standards development, Pitt said.
"Open," he added, is defined by being published, being standard and not being controlled by a single party.

Seventeen percent of global Web usage is accounted for by mobile traffic, said Martin Birk of AT&T Labs, Res. This trend is growing everywhere in the world, and its growing fast.
"Last year it was much less," Birk said. On Sunday he presented to a packed room the short course #SC203, "100Gb/s and Beyond Transmission Systems, Design and Design Trade-offs" with Benny Mikkelsen of Acacia Communications.
What does high-capacity fiber transmission have to do with the demand for wireless data? Everything, Birk explained.
