SC485 - Advanced Fiber Access Networks

Sunday, 24 March
13:00 - 16:00 (Pacific Time (US & Canada), UTC - 08:00)

Short Course Level: Intermediate (Prior knowledge of topic is necessary to appreciate course material)

Instructor:

Jun Shan Wey, Verizon, USA and Rajesh Yadav, Verizon, USA

Short Course Description:

*This course has been cancelled*

This course compliments short courses SC114 and SC444, and focuses on the overall broadband access system technology and network architecture from an operator’s perspective.

The course begins with an overview of fiber access architectures and drivers for future technology evolution, followed by discussions on recent progress in advanced PON standards and emerging technologies. The course will cover operational aspects of end-to-end fiber access systems as well as vision of future converged wireline wireless networks.

The emphasis of the course will be on operators’ pain points in deploying and operating broadband access networks, as well as how fiber access networks help operators overcome operational challenges to evolve their businesses. We will examine the entire fiber access network from end to end, including network scaling, bottlenecks, technology choices and tradeoffs due to techno-economic challenges faced by operators.

Short Course Benefits:

  • Discuss: advanced fiber access networks
  • Explain: overall broadband access system technology and network architecture
  • Compare: different optical access and PON system technologies
  • Design: their own fiber access network
Short Course Audience:

This course is designed for anyone interested in learning advanced fiber access technologies and systems with an emphasis on perspectives from operators. Basic knowledge of optical access systems is helpful but not required.

Instructor Biography:

Jun Shan Wey is with the Technology Strategy, Architecture and Planning team at Verizon. Her current work focuses on standardization and industry ecosystem development for optical access and transport networks, and 5G video media vertical. She participates in many standards organizations, including FSAN, ITU-T, IEEE, 3GPP, ATIS, and has served as an editor for several ITU-T PON standards. Shan has been active in the OFC conference program as a 2020 Program Chair, a 2022 General Chair, the 2022 John Tyndall Award Selection Committee Chair, and a member of the OFC Steering Committee.
