Hardware Innovation and SDN Bring Renewed Promise to IP+Optical Integration

IP and optical integration as a concept has a long history. It has been a topic that has come and gone at OFC for the 16 years that I have been an industry analyst and an attendee at this event. The early buzz around “IP over glass” diminished rapidly when operators quickly realized that there were no standards for interoperability.

Record-breaking Reach for Low-cost Data Transmission between Data Centers

Researchers in Germany demonstrate highest speeds yet by use of PAM-4 transmission.

01 March 2016 — Researchers working at ADVA Optical Networking in Meiningen, Germany, and the Technical University of Denmark have shown real-time transmission of 400Gbit/s (8x50G) over 100 kilometers, using the PAM-4 transmission format. Their system, which uses pulse-amplitude modulation with four discrete levels, significantly improves the cost, space and power efficiency for data center interconnect applications, providing a solution for distances up to 100km.

Today’s Not-to-Miss Programming

Show Floor Session Keynote: Network Function Virtualization—Hype or Reality?
10:30 – 11:00
Exhibit Hall Theater I

Keynote speaker Margaret Chiosi, AT&T, will discuss the current challenges of implementing Software Defined Networks (SDNs) through virtualization and control technologies, the current state of standards and open source, as well as AT&T’s progression to a SDN enabled cloud.

Show Floor Session: Launching and Getting Funding for Start-up Companies: A Fireside Chat With Drew Perkins
11:00 – 12:00
Exhibit Hall Theater III

Successful serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Infinera, Drew Perkins, shares his experiences in a Q&A format on Venture Capital, landing funding by Angel investors and how to build and maintain a company from the ground up. This fireside chat is a definite must for both intrepid and curious would be internet technology entrepreneurs.

IEEE Young Professionals "Lunch & Learn" Featuring: Dr. Simon Poole
13:30 – 15:00
Room 207D

Held on Wednesday, The IEEE Photonics Society and IEEE Communications Society hosted an "IEEE Young Professionals Lunch & Learn" aimed for students, young professionals up to 15 years post-graduation and their professors in the photonics and optics community. This event provided Young Professionals with an opportunity to better hone their interpersonal skills and receive professional advice beyond the classroom or lab.

Distinguished Guest Speaker, Dr. Simon Poole, presented, "Confessions of a Serial Entrepreneur: 30 Years of Photonic Start-ups in Academia and Industry." His goal with the event is to inspire researchers to consider how to commercialize their research, take next steps to move out of the research lab and into the brave new world of commercialization.

Show Floor Session: The Global Colocation Market—Are Worlds Colliding?
15:30 – 17:00
Exhibit Hall Theater I

The global market for colocation data center facilities has grown to be a $26 billion industry and is estimated to grow to $43 billion by 2018 (Synergy Research). The colocation industry offers providers the flexibility to establish facilities that are service specific like Cloud Exchange/Cloud Connect, to facilities that cover a larger area of focus like space and power. One part educational, one part market analysis, this exhibit will introduce new services like Cloud Exchange/Connect and strategically predict what new optical technologies colocation providers will need in the coming years.

Show Floor Session: Understanding Back Reflectance
16:00 – 17:00
Exhibit Hall Theater III

Many fiber optic researchers and designers, when trying to achieve a desired bit error rate fail to focus on reflectance and optical return loss, invited guest speaker Larry Johnson, Director and Founder of The Light Brigade, Tukwila, Washington, USA, explains why that method is all wrong in this enlightening and educational exhibit. Topics to be addressed will range from what is reflectance, to how it affects system performance (bit error rate), and proper procedures for testing ORL and reflectance.
