Improved Testing, Speed and Efficiency

Finally, the wait is over. While it felt like an eternity, OFC week is now here. A look at the first wave of press releases points us to a belief that the theme of OFC this year will be about speed and efficiency.

Regarding speed, the press releases were geared around the development of higher speed components and better testing equipment as well as 100 Gbps WDM system deployments. Furthermore, this year efficiency announcements went beyond equipment to include software, services, and organizational changes. SDN is here and companies are positioning themselves to capture the opportunity and extract value.[more]

Workshop: Connected OFCity Challenge

The tail spinning growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) is fueling the drive for smarter grids, better sensor technologies and stronger network connectivity. The desire for a more efficient urban grid is creating a ubiquitous drive for smart cities, and to keep up with the desire, this workshop intends to brainstorm the technological innovations and components needed behind developing successful smart cities. This is an interactive workshop, set against the backdrop of the OFCity municipal council’s organized competition for strategies to improve the broadband access infrastructure by 2020. Four teams will assume the identities of municipal, multidisciplinary teams and will present and defend their proposals in an open townhall meeting, in which they will recommend innovative architecture and technologies for citywide interconnectivity. Winning proposals will be selected by a panel of judges and through popular vote.

IC industries have greatly benefited from foundry models, which allow fabless manufacturers to avoid the costs of owning expensive fabrication facilities, while merchant foundries are provided with fully utilized facilities. However, as advocates for photonic IC foundries continue to increase, there are still many unresolved challenges hindering the realization of sustainable photonic foundries. This workshop seeks to collaborate and brainstorm on the role and operation future photonic foundries may take to maintain sustainability and success.
