WASHINGTON, Sept. 15—Google’s vice president of access networks, Milo Medin, is set to give a keynote presentation at the plenary session of the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), taking place in Los Angeles March 4 – 8, 2012. Medin will speak on the topic “Bandwidth, Optics and the Age of Abundance.”

OFC/NFOEC has also tapped Stuart Elby, Verizon’s  vice president of network architecture and technology, and chief technologist of Verizon Digital Media Services (VDMS) to keynote the Service Provider Summit, OFC/NFOEC’s flagship show floor program covering topics of interest to CTOs, network architects, network designers and technologists within the service provider and carrier sector. Elby will speak on “Cloud Computing as a Service.”

“In recent years, OFC/NFOEC has expanded its programming for the enterprise and service provider communities, which includes featuring new players such as Google,” said Mehran Esfandiari of AT&T, one of OFC/NFOEC 2012’s general co-chairs. “Highlighting Milo and Stu in this type of high-level programming will provide OFC/NFOEC attendees with an unparalleled perspective on the future of optical communications from two powerhouse companies in the industry. As a chair of the conference and an attendee myself, I am eager to hear what these luminaries have to say about emerging areas such as cloud computing, data centers, and entrance by non-traditional service providers in the FTTH space. ”

At Google, Medin oversees the company’s Gigabit Fiber to the Home project and other efforts to improve access to the Internet. Prior to joining Google in 2010, he was founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of M2Z Networks. Before that he was co-founder and CTO of Excite@Home, where he led the development of the company's national infrastructure, and helped deliver the first large-scale residential broadband access service in partnership with major cable operators. Medin also held positions at NASA's Ames Research Center, where he managed the primary west coast interconnect for the Internet, and architected and managed the global NASA Science Internet. Before NASA, he worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, programming high performance computers in support of various defense programs.

Elby is responsible for Verizon’s overall solutions architecture, design, and development of VDMS’ platform-as-a-service products and the cloud computing infrastructure upon which they are delivered. Elby also leads the development of Verizon’s target network architecture with the goal of driving the industry to converge toward this target. In addition, he manages the design and specification of Verizon’s core services platforms including VoIP/IMS, video, cloud computing, and Verizon Wireless’ open network service delivery platform.

OFC/NFOEC will announce additional keynote speakers in the coming weeks. For more information on the conference and exhibition, visit www.ofcnfoec.org.
