PETRA Silicon Photonics I/O Core at the center of Photonics Integration

Live Technology Demonstration of Transceiver and Technical Presentations at OFC 2016

Tokyo, Japan. – Photonics Electronics Technology Research Association (PETRA), an association of Japanese companies and research laboratories, announces live demonstration (Booth # 2245) of their multi-chip silicon photonics I/O core transceiver module integrated with FPGA, logic LSI in MCM package creating new pathways for applications in diverse fields.

“This is an exciting development bringing PETRA closer to open pathways to commercialization of the I/O core technology for a range of applications in fields such as Datacom, Industrial, Medical and Consumer Electronics”, said Dr. Tomoyuki Fujita, Executive Director of PETRA.

PETRA optical I/O core having ultra-low 5 mW/Gbps power consumption and throughput up to 300 Gbps (25Gbps x 12ch) will be configured using conventional 1310 nm FP lasers or QD lasers for high temperature applications.  Optical modules using silicon interposer to incorporate LSI, driver and TIA, polymer waveguide and industry standard low height packaging technology are developed on a PCB platform in collaboration with several partner companies in Japan. A detachable optical engine using PETRA’s optical I/O core developed jointly with a partner company is also being exhibited concurrently (Booth # 2208).

The live demonstration showcases-
  • error free transmission using FPGAs at the Transmitter and Receiver ends, over 300m MMF at 1310 nm.  The receiver uses an internal CDR function embedded in the FPGA,
  • on-package module for CPU-CPU interconnection; and
  • 120Gbps network daughter board  for network storage systems (courtesy of SEAGATE Technology LLC.)
“Bring Your Big Idea to the Core”

Besides the live demonstration PETRA will also present several papers in a Workshop and several Technical sessions-
  1. Workshop “Do photonic foundries deliver what users really need and can they ever become sustainable?”- “High-performance Optical Devices for Si Photonics Platform”, by T. Mogami,
  2. M2C.4 – “A Novel Transmitter Leveraging High-Speed Ultralow-Power Modulation of a Si Microring Modulator by Eliminating Tuning Power”, T. Akiyama et al.,
  3. Tu2F.6 – “WDM Interconnect targeted Si-Wire Optical Demultiplexers for Large Manufacturing Tolerance, Low Voltage Tunability and Polarization Diversified Operability”, S. Jeong et al., and
  4. Th1F.7 – “25-Gbps error-free operation of chip-scale Si-photonics optical transmitter       over 70degreeC with integrated quantum dot laser”, K. Yashiki et al.
About PETRA
Photonics Electronics Technology Research Association (PETRA) is an incorporated under the Japanese Act on Research and Development Partnership concerning Mining and Manufacturing Technology, established on August 24, 2009. The organization, comprising 11 companies, AIST and OITDA together with academia including overseas Universities, carries out joint research on silicon photonics. PETRA is funded by several Japanese National R&D projects on leading-edge “Photonics and Electronics Converged System Technology (PECST)” and supported by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
