ViaSat Now Shipping Forward Error Correction (FEC) for 200G

Works with a variety of modulation types for high gains in fiber optic communications

CARLSBAD, Mar. 5 - Following the success of its silicon-proven 100G Soft Decision Forward Error Correction core (ViaSat SDFEC 66100), ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) is introducing a 200G version of the product. With switchable overhead rates of 7% and 20%, the ViaSat SDFEC 66200 is one of the most configurable and flexible cores available, and is designed to work with PM-(D)16QAM, PM-(D)QPSK, and PM-(D)BPSK modulation with high net electrical coding gains. The advanced DSP and SDFEC cores are power optimized for both 40nm and 28nm CMOS processes.

ViaSat will introduce the new core at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) March 6-8 in Los Angeles (booth 2615). To complement the soft decision FEC, ViaSat also provides silicon-proven DSP IP cores for 40G, 100G and 200G coherent optical systems. These DSP designs are field-proven and provide electrical compensation for chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and nonlinear impairments in the fiber channel. Both the 100G and 200G cores are available as off-the-shelf, synthesizable ASIC netlists, ready for download. The SDFEC and DSP cores are also available in FPGA netlists.

Since enabling the first commercial use of Turbo Product Codes (TPCs) in 1998, ViaSat has built an extensive portfolio of FEC and DSP cores that has demonstrated significant performance gains over alternative products.
