Gould Fiber Optics Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary as a Leader in Manufacturing and Supplying Fiber Optic Components and Integrated Assembly Solutions

Millersville, MD, USA– March 2011 – Gould Fiber Optics, a leading worldwide manufacturer and supplier of premium passive fiber optic components and integrated modules, is celebrating its twenty-fifth year as a leader in the research, development and manufacturing of highly reliable fiber optic components and integrated assembly solutions to the military, aerospace, sensors and telecommunications industries. The company was established in 1986 to service the needs of the early fiber optics industry.

“Gould is proud of its 25 year history, growth, progress and success and thank its many team members and customers for sharing in our prosperity.“ stated Gould Technology General Manager Dr. Saeed Pilevar.

Over the last twenty five years Gould has grown to be a global leader in the industry and is responsible for pioneering new fiber optic products and manufacturing methods. Gould Fiber Optics has been awarded many patents on design, build and packaging various optical fibers and integrated optics based components with high optical specifications and harsh environmental operating conditions. Chief among those would be Gould’s highly acclaimed GlasSolder® manufacturing process, a specialized bonding technique that has created remarkable advances in field reliability and athermal packaging. Gould is ISO 9001-2008 certified and ITAR compliant.

A legacy of innovation:
•1986 Method of making polarization-insensitive, evanescent wave-fused coupler with minimal environmental sensitivity
•1988 Multimode fiber optic coupler and the method for making the coupler
•1989 Method of making a singlemode, evanescent wave coupler with reduced wavelength dependence
•1989 Method for manufacturing wavelength flattened couplers -more-
•1989 In-line singlemode fiber optic multiplexer/demultiplexer
•1994 Broadband MXN optical fiber couplers and method of making the couplers
•1996 GlasSolder® manufacturing process
•1997 Broadband optical fiber coupler and method of making the coupler
•1998 Low reflection optical fiber termination device and method using the device
•2001 Device for generating signal that is a function of optical power in optical fiber, and method of forming the same
•2002 Integrated tap monitor
•2003 Fiber Optic Device with Enhanced Resistance to Environmental Conditions and Method
•2004 Fiber Optic Device with Enhanced Environmental Resistance
•2005 Polarization maintaining splitters with Dual axis High Polarization extinction (PER) from 400-2000nm wavelength range
•2006-2007 Acquired the entire IP, know-how and assets from Teem Photonics to build and fully package high quality ion-exchange based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) splitters
•2008-2009 Implemented complete fabrication and characterization of the acquired PLC line of products in Maryland based U.S. facility
•2009 Design and build High temperature coupler to operate at 250oC with premium optical specs
•2010 Design and build High quality fused fiber optic based RGB (Red, Green, Blue) and RGBV (Red, Green, Blue & Violet) combiners

Gould’s history begins more than 25 years ago, founded as a research facility on a naval program in 1978, setting the foundation for a company enriched in the importance of quality and reliability. In 1986, Gould established a business to sell custom fused biconical tapered FBT fiber optic couplers. Over the years Gould has expanded its product portfolio and today offers a vast breadth of passive fiber optic components and integrated solutions. Products include planar, single-mode and multimode couplers, RGB & RGBV combiners, polarization maintaining couplers and more.
