It didn’t take long before the network management and control challenges became obvious at this year’s show. With the volume of data and the exploding number of connections present in the network, the provisioning and monitoring chores are even more important now than in the past. In discussion with vendors, almost all discussions included a demonstration or discussion of their newest network management innovations. SDN was discussed, but not in the abstract sense as in previous years, but as the basis for specific applications to support provisioning, planning and on-going monitoring and maintenance.
Included are a few examples that span the network management space, there are many more, but these represent they types of innovations and their benefits to operators. In discussions with Cisco, its Zero-Touch provisioning was once again front and center when talking about the merits of its NCS series optical platforms, which are all based on a version of IOS-XR tuned for the transport market. Coriant discussed their new Coriant Aware solution, which addresses limitations in current planning tools that lack real-time knowledge of the network including fiber/span properties or actual optical performance. Sedona Systems touted their NetFusion 1.3 that provides operators visibility of all network elements by stitching together the network’s diverse topology. Huawei showcased a number of new innovations with demonstrations of future tools that leverage analytics and big data to provide inferences into traffic patterns and quickly locate network trouble spots. As SDN becomes more prevalent, expect a continued flow of new tools and techniques to extract more value out of the network assets.
